It can be nice to be the first at something. If you’re Lys Assia, for example, no-one can take that first ever contest win away from you. If you’re Céline Dion, no-one else has won dressed as a shuttlecock. I jest, Céline had a great song in 1988.

I’m concentrating on Swiss performers as today’s birthday boy Piero Esteriore achieved a first. But it’s a first he might not be so keen to shout about. Piero and his chums Sabrina, Tina, Sergio and Damian were in the first ever official semi-final in the host city. And Piero and his chums were the first act to finish last in such a semi-final. And, they were the first ever act to get zero points in a semi-final. Piero therefore has a very dubious first to add to the list of other firsts by Swiss performers. Can you think of any more?
