‘How do you solve a problem like Maria’ saw just one nun singing in Austria in ‘The Sound of Music’. However there are SIX Maltese nuns who want to set Austria alight next year and they are one of the 48 shortlisted acts for the Maltese Eurovision entry for 2015.
A group of six Ursuline nuns will be singing an up tempo pop tune composed by Philip Vella called ‘Love and Let Go’. Now don’t get worried! The nuns have not broken their vows nor will they singing about that special man but the song is about their experiences raising abandoned children at the Sliema crèche in Malta. .
The nuns’ song ‘Love and Let Go’ is one of 48 songs that have been shortlisted for the Maltese Eurovision 2015 Selection contest this November. You have Sr Michaela, Sr Monica, Sr Rita, Sr Claudia, Sr Denise and Sr Magdalong. We’re fondly calling them ‘Sister Act’ from now on. We have no video of their song but hopefully that will change next week! when the Top 20 are announced.
Speaking to the ‘Times of Malta’ they said
“At first we thought it was silly for nuns to enter the Eurovision Song Contest, we thought it wasn’t our place. But then we figured why not? We’re doing it for the church and for the children we help,”
They have been working on the song since August and rehearse after Mass and caring for the children. This is a Hollywood movie in the making!
They had to speak to the ‘Man at the Top’ to compete – no not God but close – Archbishop Paul Cremona. His advise was to
“follow the advice of Pope Francis and Evangelise the world”.
Sr Michaela said
“So that’s what we’re doing. Now that it’s happening, I have to pinch myself,”
The 48 songs will be shortlisted to 20 on October 3. The contest is being held on November 21st and 22nd.

We want to see ‘Sister Act’ make the last 20 in Malta so join us in a having a little word with the Big Man upstairs in asking that we see them perform live in the last 20.

‘Sister Act’ would not be the first Nun to come to recent song contest stardom. Sr Cristina won ‘The Voice of Italy’ earlier this year with songs like ‘Living on a Prayer’, ‘What a Feeling’ and ‘The Time of My Life’.
So as the song goes ‘Say a little prayer’ for them! We need to hear their song on the big MESC Stage!
