#BIRTHDAY: Freddy Quinn is 94 today

It’s good to remember our roots. Yes, the 1950s may be an increasingly further distance away, but it’s where our favourite TV show started, and set good foundations. So let’s go back to that first contest in sunny Switzerland, one midweek May evening.

You will notice when you watch the video below that the pictures aren’t moving – much. That’s because the contest in 1956 is still only in audio, as far as we know. Today’s birthday boy is Freddy Quinn, born Franz Eugen Helmut Manfred Nidl (no wonder he goes by Freddy Quinn). There are rumours that this song came ninth, but of course we’ll probably never know for sure. But when you hear the other 13 songs when the circus debuted in Lugano, was this the most contemporary?
