They have pleaded with Spanish Broadcasters to send them to Eurovision for the past 4 years. They want to go to Stockholm and bring their rock sound to Eurovision 2016. With big 80’s rock hairstyles they could give a Swedish wind machine a good run for its money!
Yes, Spanish rock band Mägo de Oz (Wizard of Oz) are begging their record company Warner to let them go to Eurovision.
How would you describe Mägo de Oz?
They are a Spanish folk/heavy metal band from Begoña, Madrid and were formed in mid-1988 by drummer Txus di Fellatio. The band became well-known for the strong Celtic feel to their music strengthened through their consistent usage of a violinist and flautist.
In an interview with ABC.ES the band have revealed that they have already prepared a selection of material for Spanish Broadcaster TVE.
In another interview with Eurovision-Spain the band revealed
“We have repeatedly asked Warner to do everything possible to send us because we believe that Spain in the contest need something new and fresh. If you travel in Europe you find that the hard rock, hip-hop and other genres cornered in our country are very normal. Here we are still in transition, the musical level of the seventies. The rock still sounds dangerous . I think that’s why Warner are a little scary.”
Are they scared of the reaction of fans to them wanting to go to Eurovision?
For a band like Mägo de Oz it could be seen as a huge departure from their rock/metal image to go mainstream by entering Eurovision but the band see it a differently.
“Just be upset if we sell out and changed our musical style . But if we go out on stage (Eurovision) to make a ‘pagan holiday’ with a firework display and all the paraphernalia that we carry in our concerts, our fans would love it. Then there are the fans of heavy metal, that judge us by going to the festival, but those people never have interested us.”
The band have changed their opinion of Eurovision as they were asked about entering the contest on radio back in 2009 and they said “we still have some dignity” and would not consider the opportunity. However times and opinions have changed and Mägo de Oz want to go to Stockholm and Eurovision 2016.
Would Mägo de Oz be a good choice for Eurovision 2016? Is Eurovision ready for a Rock Band to take the title of the contest? Is there enough hairspray in Sweden to cope with the demands of Mägo de Oz?
