LIVE BLOG
First up
Tanja – “Amazing”
Firstly I cannot believe they are asking Tanja to talk after that performance. I thought she was in the Eurovision Young Dancers contest as she was thrown around the stage like I have never seen before and she didn’t look out of breath. I was grabbing the tissues to wipe the sweat from my forehead! A Euphoria style dance song that had more visual than song content. I felt cold – though totally out of breath looking at the performance.
The Titles – “Flame”
Am I being premature again and saying that this is my favourite song of the night? What more do you want – a handsome man with an effortlessly cool looking band singing an electronic pop song. This makes me think of “Heaven 17” meets Ultravox but with a funky naughties feel to it. If you want modern lounge music to get freaky to then look no further – The Titles are for you!
Wilhelm – “Resignal”
This is certainly no Winny Puhh – more is the pity! A gentle folk song that Estonia has sent far to many times to Eurovision. Have they not received the memo that we want something different from our Estonian friends. I felt underwhelmed by this and if it went to Eurovision we have our first toilet break of the show.
What I do love is the huge arguments between the 2 spokesmen who comment – no ARGUE – over the songs. I just wish I spoke Estonian as their barney was more interesting than Wilhelm
State of Zoe – Solina
Well I hope the lead singer is not called Zoe but why they thought it wise to put a pretty girl in a dreadful 80’s reject dress from Dynasty I will never know! Besides the clobber of Zoe – this is another great electro pop song. It builds wonderfully and Zoe has a huge range in her voice that had that raspy quality to it. She was really strong on camera though the back up singer looked totally uninterested when she was in shot. This has plenty of potential and I hope they get a chance to prove me right in the final!
Nimmerschmidt – Sandra
Geek Chic comes to town with Nimmerschmidt. Again an electro pop song – which seems to be all the rage in Estonia this year. I wonder who “Sandra” is as I am not sure if this was a love song to her or a “I’m glad you’re gone song” as the singer kept the same expression throughout the song. If Eesti Laul doesn’t work out for him then he should start a school for “Poker Face Players” as I couldn’t read if he was happy or sad during that performance. With similar songs with more charisma in their performances – this may miss out
Loving the 2 grumpy spokesmen arguing again. It is the 2 men from the balcony in the Muppet Show #FAB
We are meeting the jury – the whole 200 of them and a varied bunch they are!
VÖÖRAD – Maailm on hull
There maybe no Winny Puhh but we have the barking crazy Voorad. A male rapper accompanied by a female singer in an ensemble that I am sure I have seen in the pages of a Victoria Secret catalogue. Add to that a Giant Jack in the box with not 1, not 2 but 3 living JACKS that came out and danced and got beaten several times by the rapper. It was like looking at Kanye West on a PR charm offensive with the paparazzi. A rap and dance song that I would like to see again for the sheer fun of it! Not a Eurovision contender but something different
God I am loving this bizarre episode of Eesti Laul
Super hot cosmos blues band – Maybe-maybe
It must be bright in the studio as all the members of “Super Hot Cosmos Blues Band” are wearing shades! Is the show sponsored by Ray Ban? As the name of the band suggests they are a blues band. A blues band with a hint of grunge to them. Think of Robbie Robertson’s 80’s hit “Somewhere Down the Crazy River” but i think they maybe up the creek without a paddle with this song. A very niche song that failed to set the stage ablaze despite the “Super Hot” name to the band
August Hunt – Kus on EXIT?
Funky, Funky, Funky!! Loving this group. They look like a group of misfits going to the prom! 5 guys and 1 girl with some cheesy dance moves and hair that looked like it hasn’t been washed in several weeks. Saying that “IT WORKED”. I loved these “Geeky Groovers”. They can be my Valentine Date in their ill-fitted tuxedos. It shouldn’t work but it does! Interesting and I want to see and hear more from then!
Kõrsikud – Tule ja jää
Thank you Eesti laul for bringing these guys back! They are 3 more mature and well fed men – not unlike myself – that look like they have been dragged off the street and told to sing! This had light and shade to it. I am a sucker for the tender tones of xylophone – especially if they are being played so delicately by a big burly man! The young audience loved it as they were all using their mobile phones as lighters. Has to make the final if there is any justice left in this world – ok a tad OTT – justice left in Estonia!
Lenna – Supernoova
More “NOVA” and less “SUPER” for me. It is a mid tempo rock song for the suburbs that is driving around in a 30 MPH zone. This never got going for me no matter how good Lenna sang it and swished her hair around like a shampoo tv advert. Even the usually 2 animated spokes men were rather subdued following that performance. If this was to go to Eurovision then it would get lost in the galaxy of the Semi Finals!
Can you believe that is your 10 songs!
My Predictions for the 5 places in the Final
- The titles – Flame
- State of Zoe – Solina
- VÖÖRAD – Maailm on hull
- August Hunt – Kus on EXIT?
- Kõrsikud – Tule ja jää
Interval Acts
Oh this is fantastic. 3 circus clowns covering all the Estonian Eurovision entries – including a Winny Puhh ode to moment. Words cannot describe how amazing that was! Well done ERT!
JURY VOTES
No points were announced except 5 acts were singled out for the Jury. Well it looks as if the Estonian Jury and I were looking at a completely different show!
Of my Top 5 only 1 was selected by the Jury
Jury 5 Acts
- Tanja – Amazing
- Wilhelm – Resignal
- Super hot cosmos blues band – Maybe-maybe
- Kõrsikud – Tule ja jää
- Lenna – Supernoova
TELEVOTING LINES ARE CLOSED – Lets hope for some sense from the Public!
The 5 Acts Making the Grand Final are
- Tanja – Amazing
- Wilhelm – Resignal
- Super hot cosmos blues band – Maybe-maybe
- Kõrsikud – Tule ja jää
- Lenna – Supernoova
Either I am the kiss of death for acts or that the Estonian Public got it wrong. Hmmm – I am going for the latter!
Overall an entertaining night of Eesti Laul
Did you score better than me in predicting the finalists?
