As we all know , Austria won the 2025 edition of the Eurovision Song contest in Basel, with JJ and “Wasted Love”. and we will be travelling to Austria’s capital city, Vienna , for the 2026 edition of our beloved contest. JJ’s victory in Basel was the third victory for Austria at the contest , with previous wins being in 1966, with Udo Jurgens and “Mercie Cherie “and again in 2014 when Conchita Wurst took victory for the nation with “Rise like a Phoenix ” in Copenhagen, Denmark.
With this in mind, we at Eurovision Ireland, decided it would be interesting to create a series , looking back over the years at previous Austrian acts and how they fared in the contest , in the years that Austria have taken part . Today, in Part 11 of our series, we will look at the years 1992,1993,1994.
1992 –Tony Wegas “Zusammen Geh’n
Tony Wegas was selected by Austria to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden. He had tried to represent Austria the previous year , but lost out in the National Selection to Thomas Forstener . Tony came 10th with 69 points.
1993 -Tony Wegas “María Magdalena “
Following his appearance at the 1992 contest and the 10th place finish , Tony was given another opportunity at the contest in Mill Street, County Cork, Ireland in 1993. The song was selected during a national final where all songs were sung by Tony .The song ” Maria Magdalena” was chosen .Sadly for Tony, he achieved a worse result than the previous year’s 10th place. He finished 14th with 32 points.
1994-Petra Frey ” Für den Frieden der Welt”
Petra Frey, an Austrian singer represented Austria at the 1994 contest in Dublin with the song “Für den Frieden der Welt “. She finished 17th with just 19 points. Incidentally, Petra came back for another try to represent her country in 2003 but lost out in the national final to Alf Poier , who went on to achieve 6th place at the contest in Riga .
And that concludes our look back at 1992, 1993 and 1994.
