Another Austrian city has withdrawn their interest in hosting the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest.
The City of Graz has decided not to bid to host the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. Elke Kahr, Mayor of Graz, had the following to say:
“In view of the tense financial situation of the city, which also made a budget freeze necessary, it was clear from the beginning that an application could only be made if the costs for Graz remained within a reasonable range. This would have required substantial participation by the state and the federal government. Numerous discussions were held at all levels, but they did not lead to any binding commitments.
After a comprehensive and detailed examination, the costs would amount to €29.35 million (gross). This value is surprising, as it is far above the (inflation-adjusted) value from 2014, when Graz bid to host Eurovision 2015. This is due to the significantly increased requirements, which are reflected in a correspondingly long list.
An application within the now known budget is not justifiable for Graz, as much as I understand all those who would have liked to have had Eurovision in our city.”
The following cities and towns have stated that they are examining or will bid to host the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest:
- Innsbruck
- Linz & Wels
- St Pölten
- Vienna
