The Mexican government has launched México Canta, a festival, which is organised by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Mexican Council of Music. It is part of a wider effort to encourage peaceful cultural expression and expand professional opportunities within the music industry.
The competition is open to individuals aged 18 to 34 residing in Mexico or the United States, with participants able to register up until yesterday, Friday 30th May. Entrants could submit one original or interpreted song, no longer than three minutes, performed in Spanish, an Indigenous language, or Spanglish. The contest will feature genres such as mariachi, norteño, banda, corridos, tropical, duranguense, bolero, rap, and hip-hop.
Initial selection stages will take place in June, before state/regional eliminations take place over the summer. Eliminations in Mexico will take place in Tijuana, Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Durango, while eliminations in the US will take place in Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles. The Grand Final will take place on Sunday 5th October, in Durango.
