During the last week, while we had restricted press access , we at Eurovision Ireland have been taking a look back at some of the memorable moments of Eurovision over the years.
There is no doubt that Eurovision over the years has often given us lots of rather entertaining moments, apart from the singing ! Ranging from the funny, to weird, to dramatic and sometimes serious .Who could, for example, forget the four country win back in 1969 , or host Lill Lindfors , losing her skirt at the contest in Gothenburg in 1985? We at Eurovision Ireland decided it would be fun to look back at some of those entertaining moments , so each day during the run up to Basel 2025, we will be refreshing those memories by looking at one of those special moments .
Today’s Memory
One of the joys for the winning performer at Eurovision is receiving that coveted trophy on the stage and being immersed in the elation of winning the contest for their country. However, in 1999, it didn’t go quite the way it should for that year’s winner , Charlotte Nilsson. It’s tradition for the previous year’s winner to hand over the trophy to the new winner and so that job fell to Dana International, who had won for Israel in 1998 , in Birmingham, UK . Charlotte had won the contest for Sweden, with “Take me to your heaven”.As Dana walked on the stage, one of the Swedish composers of the winning entry stepped on her long dress by mistake, causing her to fall down on the stage . She was able to get up but it seems that Charlotte Nilsson never actually got presented with the award !
