
Here at Eurovision Ireland, we are taking a historical look back on our favourite Contests past and present, on the very day they took place. Today it’s May 9th:
Saturday 9th May 1998
On this day in 1998, the 43rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Birmingham, the United Kingdom. North Macedonia debuted, while Belgium, Finland, Israel, Romania & Slovakia all returned. Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Iceland, Italy & Russia all withdrew from the Contest. Israel took victory with Dana International performing “Diva” and 172 points.
Saturday 9th May 1992
On this day in 1992, the 37th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Malmo. Yugoslavia returned to the Contest. Ireland took victory with Linda Martin performing “Why Me?” and 155 points.
Saturday 9th May 1987
On this day in 1987, the 32nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Brussels, Belgium. Greece & Italy returned to the Contest. Ireland took victory with Johnny Logan performing “Hold Me Now” and 172 points.
