
Here at Eurovision Ireland, we are taking a historical look back on our favourite Contests past and present, on the very day they took place. Today it’s March 12th:
Saturday 12th March 2022
On this day in 2022, the 62rd edition of Melodifestivalen took place in Stockholm. Cornelia Jakobs took victory with “Hold Me Closer” and 146 points. At the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Cornelia finished 4th, with 438 points.
Saturday 12th March 2016
On this day in 2016, the 56th edition of Melodifestivalen took place in Stockholm. Frans took victory with “If I Were Sorry” and 156 points. At the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm, Frans finished 5th, with 261 points.
Saturday 12th March 2011
On this day in 2011, the 63rd edition of Melodifestivalen took place in Stockholm. Eric Saade took victory with “Popular” and 193 points. At the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf, Eric finished 3rd, with 185 points.
Saturday 12th March 1994
On this day in 1994, the 34th edition of Melodifestivalen took place in Stockholm. Marie Bergman & Roger Pontare took victory with “Stjärnorna” and 66 points. At the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, Marie & Roger finished 13th, with 48 points.
Wednesday 12th March 1958
On this day in 1958, the 3rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Sweden debuted, while the United Kingdom withdrew from the Contest. France took victory with André Claveau performing “Dors, mon amour” and 27 points.
