The EBU, the European Broadcasting Union, have released a statement following the flag policy that was in place during the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, in Malmö. Issued to The Independent, the statement read as follow:

“As in previous years such as 2023, SVT’s policy was to allow the flags of the participating countries and the rainbow flags. There has never been an express ban on the EU flag in the written policy.

Due to heightened geopolitical tensions, the flag policy was more rigorously enforced by security at this year’s event. We will look again at the flag policy for 2025 in conjunction with our new host broadcaster.”

The statement comes after comments from the European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, regarding European Union flags not being allowed in the venue for Eurovision 2024. While the general LGBTQ+ Rainbow flags were allowed, Artists had to smuggle the Trans and Non-Binary flags in past security.
