
Over the course of April and May, on the lead up to the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, we will be celebrating the countries that are participating this year in Rotterdam. Today, we celebrate Sweden.
Sweden debuted at the Contest in 1958, in Hilversum, The Netherlands. Alice Babs finished in fourth place with their entry “Lilla stjärna”, scoring 10 points.
The most successful entry from Sweden was in 1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012 and 2015. In 1974, when the Contest took place in Brighton, the United Kingdom, ABBA finished in first place with their entry “Waterloo”, scoring 24 points.
In 1984, when the Contest took place in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, The Herreys finished in first place with their entry “Diggi-Loo Diggi Ley”, scoring 145 points. This included five sets of twelve points from Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany and Ireland.
In 1991, when the Contest took place in Rome, Italy, Carola finished in first place with her entry “Fångad av en stormvind”, scoring 146 points. This included four sets of twelve points from Denmark, Germany, Iceland and the United Kingdom.
In 1999, when the Contest took place in Jerusalem, Israel, Charlotte Nilsson finished in first place with her entry “Take Me to Your Heaven”, scoring 163 points. This included five sets of twelve points from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Estonia, Malta, Norway and the United Kingdom.
In 2012, when the Contest took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, Loreen finished in first place with her entry “Euphoria”, scoring 372 points. This included eighteen sets of twelve points from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, The Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Spain and the United Kingdom.
In 2015, when the Contest took place in Vienna, Austria, Måns Zelmerlöw finished in first place with his entry “Heroes”, scoring 365 points. This included twelve sets of twelve points from Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The most recent Swedish entry was due to be in 2020, when the cancelled Contest was due to take place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Mamas were due to represent Sweden with their entry “Move”.
This year, Sweden will be represented by Tusse with his song “Voices”. Will Tusse take Sweden to their seventh victory?
