Eurovision 2021

Do you remember when…? : A look back at the fun, drama, weird and wonderful moments at Eurovision !

It’s that time of year again when the next two weeks are given over to the fun and excitement of the build up to the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest, this year to be held in Basel , Switzerland. My colleagues , John ,James and Richard are already out and about around there , so in the meantime , those of us back in Blighty will keep you entertained with all things Eurovision!

There is no doubt that Eurovision over the years has often given us lots of rather entertaining moments, apart from the singing ! Ranging from the funny, to weird, to dramatic and sometimes serious .Who could, for example, forget the four country win back in 1969 , or host Lil Lindfors , losing her skirt at the contest in Gothenburg in 1985? We at Eurovision decided it would be fun to look back at some of those entertaining moments , so each day during the run up to Basel 2025, we will be refreshing those memories by looking at one of those special moments .

So yesterday, our Memory was from the 1969 Eurovision Song contest, where we looked at how we ended up with 4 winners, the first time this had happened in the history of the contest and caused a few headaches for the organisers. There were probably many who thought this couldn’t happen again but back in 1991, we had another tie break situation , where Amina , from France with her song “C’est la dernière qui a parlé qui a raison” and Carola from Sweden,”Fångad av en Stormwind” tied for first place at the end of the voting with 146 points each. . Thankfully , by this time, the contest organisers had , from 1989 ,worked out a plan to put into place if a draw for first place happened again , so they used a tie break method, which was that the country that had the most 12 points in the voting would be the winner. If there was a tie break after this then it came down to the number of 10 points. Both France and Sweden had received four sets of 12 points, so it did go down to the number of 10 points and Sweden had scored five 10s , compared to France’s two , so therefore were declared the winners. A close thing and relief for Sweden, but you have to feel for France, who came so close to their first win since 1977 and there are still many these days , who feel that France should have taken victory, due to the uniqueness of their song.
