🇸🇪 #ESC24: Friends Arena Centre To Stockholm Host City Bid

Stockholm aim to use Friends Arena as part of their Host City bid, for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest.

Preparations for the Stockholm Host City bid started before the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, in Liverpool, took place. Karin Wanngård, the Financial City Commissioner of Stockholm, stated the following:

“The city’s main target for a venue for our Eurovision 2024 bid will be the Friends Arena.”

While the capacity of Friends Arena is 60,000, it is likely to be reduced to 30,000 – a similar audience number for when the arena hosts the Melodifestivalen Grand Final. While Stockholm is the obvious Host City, Friends Arena houses one of the local football teams, while Tele2 houses another two. Unsurprisingly, all three teams are against moving for a lengthly time, as the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest would fall in the middle of the Swedish football season.

Stockholm Live, the operator of both venues, had the following to say:

“We have just received the happy news and everything is very new. For Tele2 arena and Friends arena, Eurovision falls in the middle of a football season. We start dialogues about when Eurovision wants to enter in such cases and how we can plan around other events. More than that is hard to say.”
