Tonight see’s the continuation of Melodifestivalen – with all six shows this year coming from Stockholm, with no audience. For Semi Final 2, Christer Bjorkman will be joined by Anis Don Demina & Oscar Zia for hosting duties – Christer will be joined by somebody different each week.
Join me, Richard, from 19:00 GMT/20:00 CET as we follow the fun and frolics that the Swedes have for us this year! Don’t forget to refresh the page to get the up-to-date comments!
Refresh From 19:00 GMT/20:00 CET
Oscar Zia and Anis Don Demina start off tonight’s proceedings with a Melodifestivalen mash-up from previous years. Oscar seems to have been placed in a green suit from the 1970’s for his hosting role. Anis on the other hand, is dressed as we are used to.
After Oscar and Anis introduce the semi finalists, they welcome Christer who explains how to vote.
New Religion – Anton Ewald
Preceding each performance, the forthcoming artist appears with Oscar and Anis is a clip. Anton has returned to Melodifestivalen with a new sound – a bit of The Roop inspired musical score I’d say. Anton’s black jacket has been enhanced with gold bling. He is also joined on stage by two backing dancers. A possible Andra Chansen candidate, but I can’t see it going direct to the Final.
Rich – Julia Alfrida
Julia is this year’s P4 Nasta qualifier. Julia is in an emerald green outfit, performing a dark, yet modern song. A lot of red lighting and projections are used throughout – adding some character to the performance. This would have really been enhanced by a live audience present. Could we finally see a P4 Nasta qualifier progress in this competition?
90-talet – WAHL feat. SAMI
The third entry tonight is also the 1000th in the history of Melodifestivalen. Not only are WAHL and SAMI’s outfits colourful, so is the lighting, back projections and on-stage props. While this is a very lively performance which should go down with the youth, rap crossed with dance is an unusual genre – for both Melodifestivalen and the Eurovision Song Contest. Definitely the most upbeat performance by far.
The Silence – Frida Green
Frida is the Swedish Niamh Kavagnah lookalike and soundalike – especially dressed in a stunning emerald green ballgown. Emerald green and orange features in the lighting and back projections. Her trio of backing singers, dressed in black, appear two thirds in and this makes a big statement. For a moment, I really thought I was watching an Irish winner. Possibly a direct to the Final?
Rena rama ding dong – Eva Rydberg & Ewa Roos
Oh my! If I grow to Eva and Ewa’s age living my life like their’s, then I’m in for a healthy and joyous one. While they are both stood on individual plinths, before moving on to the stage, they do know how to boogie. Vocally they sound great and sparkle in their outfits. Please get them direct to the Final!
Tears Run Dry – Patrik Jean
Patrik, who is in a white suit tonight, is also the last of five debutants tonight. He is joined by four backing dancers, also in white. This is a very pleasant ditty, which isn’t necessarily normally associated with Sweden. The performance, great as it is, would’ve been enhanced by a live audience present. For me, another direct to the Final – but I’m predicting to many for this qualification!
Little Tot – Dotter
It’s time for last year’s runner-up, Dotter. OK, this is a completely different sound to Bulletproof – more stripped back. Dotter is dressed in black, as is her four backing dancers. For me this doesn’t have anywhere near the impact that Bulletproof had. Dotter may well make the Andra Chansen round for been who she is – but could this be one of those surprise eliminations?
The voting has now opened. We are now treated to a recap of tonight’s entries. Another Oscar and Anis sketch is now playing. The voting (the first round) has closed.
Through to the second round of voting are: Anton Ewald, Julia Alfrida, WAHL feat. SAMI, Frida Green, Eva Rydberg & Ewa Roos, Patrik Jean, Dotter. Julia Alfrida and WAHL feat. SAMI have fallen at the first hurdle.
The second round of voting for the evening has opened. Oscar and Anis are having a Melodifestivalen memory lane moment. Tonight’s voting has now closed. Here we go!!!
