Sweden – The 28 acts that will compete in the 2015 edition of Melodifestivalen have been announced as too have been the composers of the 28 songs.
Remember that SVT wanted to have a 50/50 split between male and female composers enter the contest, well we decided to take a closer look at the writers that made it to the live shows of Melodifestivalen 2015.
In total there are 90 songwriters/lyricists accredited with the 28 songs announced yesterday and today by SVT.
However when you look at the gender breakdown of these 90 people responsible for the 28 songs it is very interesting. Of the 90 people 68 are male and 22 are female. This works out at a 75%/25% split between male and female writers respectively.
In fact of the 90 writers there are several that have multiple entries.
So did SVT’s gender quotas for entries produce a higher proportion of female songwriters in the contest? With a ratio of 3:1 you may have to ask if SVT should have followed RÚV’s lead in Iceland and drop the gender quota and look for the best songwriters period?
