Emmelie de Forest comes of age in her new song and video for ‘Drunk Tonight’. There seems to be a drop in sobriety with Eurovision singers recently with Waylon releasing the equally fantastic ‘Love Drunk’. Emmelie’s offering is as equally intoxicating and the video has me seeing double vision.
The video for ‘Drunk Tonight’ was released today and we see Emmelie as a truly grown woman now. She is completely comfortable in her own skin and is not afraid to show us too.
Form the first seconds of the video it shows Emmelie casting aside her Eurovision image and this matches the growth and maturity in her music over the past year.
What I like about this song is that it is personal. Raw emotions that are played between many of us who have gone through a break up where “nothing is worse than a drunk ex text”. God how we have all either done or experienced that. It is like reopening a wound and is deeply painful. That is in essence what Emmelie’s song is about.
It is hard to leave something or someone whom you have loved. But there comes a point in time when you just have to “let it go”. It is like that “one last drink” that you feel you need when you are drunk, yet in reality you really should leave it alone as it is going to be no good for you.
This is a transition song for de Forest as it has hints of her previous Eurovision songs with the pulsating drums, yet the subject matter is certainly of an adult content. It is hard to break that image of the wholesome Eurovision girl who sang in her bare feet but that is what she has done. The mold is certainly broken but what has emerged is a far more interesting and beautiful sound from Emmelie.
What we now need is for the song to chart across Europe.
Marks out of 12 – it has to be a maximum ‘Douze Points’ for Emmelie De Forest’s ‘Drunk Tonight’.
